JOAQUIN PHOENIX JOKER IN NEW BATMAN MOVIE
The film made history as the first R-rated movie ever to gross over $1 billion worldwide. “Joker” was the sixth highest-grossing film of 2019 after winning the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. Add in a few nods to the fact that maybe Arthur (Phoenix) may be half-siblings with Bruce, and the twisted entanglement between Joker and Batman goes deeper than other typical DC superhero films. Phoenix landed a Best Actor Oscar win for Gotham City corruption story that used “King of Comedy” tendencies and “Taxi Driver” aesthetics to convey the rot and the bile behind the rise of mega-millionaire political family the Waynes, while would-be Batman, Bruce Wayne (Dante Pereira-Olson), grows up parentless. Phoenix reprises the titular role after the 2019 origin story, directed by Todd Phillips and co-penned by Scott Silver (“The Fighter”). But so far, only Ledger and Phoenix have been able to nail down that subtlety, which is another reason I would've re-casted Phoenix in the role.“Joker” is nothing but a comedy, and the return of Joaquin Phoenix as “Batman” baddie Arthur Fleck is more than highly anticipated. It's not just showing up on set and acting like some unhinged cornball, anyone can do that. Meanwhile, Ledger and Phoenix were really the ONLY actors who understood there's a subtlety to The Joker that needs to be pinned down. You got these Oscar-winning actors who think that all you have to do to play The Joker is go on set and act really crazy, which usually ends up with a wacky, cartoonish ass performance. You would've had people speculating, "Is this a part of Phillips' world? Was Joker REALLY a prequel to The Batman? How does it work?"Īlso, there are only two actors in the HISTORY of cinema that portrayed (to me) a comic accurate Joker. The discussion alone would've generated interest. But I'd bet money that just re-casting him alone would've guaranteed The Batman makes a billion dollars at the box office. It wouldn't even necessarily have to be Todd Phillips' Joker, Phoenix could've easily played another version of Joker with a different take on it.

Let me tell you, I have no doubt in my mind that this movie would've been a guaranteed billion if they re-casted Phoenix in the role of the Joker.
